Abstract

Background: The quality kangaroo mother program is an affordable low-cost strategy that helps to reducing the neonatal mortality rate of preterm infants by 2025.

Objective: Determine the relationship between nurses’ knowledge and the satisfaction of users of a kangaroo mother program.

Material and methods: Correlational study in a Hospital / Maternity of San Luis Potosí in 2015. Thirty Kangaroo Mothers participated, to whom the Picker’s Pediatric Acute Care User Satisfaction Questionnaire was applied (validated in the Latin American population) and 21 Nurses with the application of the PMC-Corpus Knowledge Questionnaire (cronbach 0.934). Descriptive and correlational analysis (r Pearson).

Results: Overall satisfaction of kangaroo mothers (87.7%), the best rating (≥90%) was obtained in: physical comfort, care coordination, and staff accessibility. The lowest score was in continuity of care (74.3%) and permanence and visits (74.1%). Adequate knowledge of nurses about PMC (57.1%), this was correlated with maternal satisfaction (r = 0.532, p≤0.05).

Conclusions: The kangaroo mothers showed satisfaction with the program, except in continuity of care. The areas of opportunity are visualized in the preparation for hospital discharge with inclusion and training of parents and family, and nursing training in the program.
