Introduction: The management and use of medications is a critical system in patient safety, to provide a safe pharmacotherapeutic.
Objective: Describe the management and use of medications by central venous catheter to critically ill patients.
Methodology: Descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study. Non-probabilistic sample (n = 70) of adult patients in critical condition to evaluate the management and use of medications by central venous catheter, in intensive care, hospitalization and emergencies. Direct observation was made with a guide based on 3 items and later analysis was done with the statistical package SPSS version 22.
Results: The standard Management and use of medications with 98.7% compliance was evaluated, as for the use of lumens of the central venous catheter, adequate compliance was identified 92%, finding the use of distal and proximal lumen with inverted infusions, as well as the indicator of Quality presented 82%, with omissions in labeling of intermittent medications, dates in infusion equipment and 3-way keys. The technical quality in the management and use of medications by central venous catheter was: inadequate 40%, regular 34.3% and adequate 25.7%.
Conclusions: According to the quality results, the improvement should be trained and promoted based on standardizing the use of lumens to minister medications, strengthening the labeling of intermittent drugs and labeling of dates, since it impacts the patient's safety system.
