Introduction: in spite of having screening tests for the detection of cervical cancer, it is still presented as one of the main causes of mortality in women worldwide. The myths and experiences that other women transmit can become a barrier so that they do not go for a Pap test. Objective: to interpret the experiences before the taking of the Papanicolaou in students of the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes. Material and methods: qualitative study of phenomenological cut, conformed by a non probabilistic sample by snowball until saturation of the data of 10 people through the semi structured interview, from October to November of 2018. Results: participants mentioned "Nervous, very nervous", "I was very afraid that I would hurt or bleed", "the procedure is uncomfortable", "Nervous because he was a nurse and a student ... Both were men, it was a little uncomfortable''. Conclusion: personnel who perform the screening, since most of them were negative, due to the lack of information; the negative comments towards the person and the scarce empathy of the personnel influence the experiences of women who undergo the Pap smear.
