Abstract

Introduction: In order to broaden the panorama of the experience of older adults in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to take into account that a person has the capacity to adapt, a characteristic that can modify the different areas of life, therefore; identifying the level of adaptation that an individual possesses gives the guidelines of the effect that this situation had on this population, as well as questioning if the presence of stress has a certain link with it.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between the level of adaptation and perceived stress in older adults in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic in the municipalities of Atitalaquia, Tetepango, and Tepeji del Rio Ocampo.

Material and methods: Cross-sectional and correlational study carried out in a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 375 older adults. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee and the participants signed an informed consent letter prior to their participation in the study. After applying for a sociodemographic data card, the Perceived Stress Scale was applied to measure the degree of stress of the participants. The Active Older Adult Adaptation Instrument was obtained, which evaluates the following four adaptive modes: physiological, self-concept, interdependence, and role function.

Results: The mean age of the participants was 68.7 years with a standard deviation of ± 7.8 years; slightly more than half of the participants were women (53.3%). A low correlation was observed between the level of adaptation and perceived stress.

Discussion: 58% of older adults report stress, akin to 47% in another study. Similarly, other studies note sociodemographic differences influencing adaptation levels, with 36% of older adults living alone, compared to 10.9%. High physiological adaptation and role integration are observed, but differences exist in self-concept and interdependence, possibly influenced by COVID-19, and with smaller sample sizes (n=35).

Conclusion: There is a relationship between the level of adaptation and perceived stress in older adults in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic in the municipalities of Atitalaquia, Tetepango, and Tepeji del Río Ocampo in Hidalgo, Mexico.
